A TEXTUAL AND CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF GALATIANS 1:6-10 IN DIALOGUE WITH CONTEMPORARY PROSPERITY THEOLOGY IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This study conducts a textual and contextual analysis of Galatians 1:6-10 in dialogue with contemporary Prosperity Theology in Nigeria. Galatians 1:6-10 serves as a critical lens through which the core tenets of Prosperity Theology are examined, particularly its emphasis on material wealth as a sign of divine favour. The analysis reveals that the apostle Paul’s admonition against accepting a "different gospel" resonates with the current practices of many prosperity preachers who prioritize financial contributions over spiritual integrity.

This paper highlights the theological and ethical implications of Prosperity Theology, particularly its tendency to exploit vulnerable congregants while distorting biblical teachings. Furthermore, it explores the socio-economic impact of Prosperity Theology on the Nigerian church, emphasizing how it can lead to spiritual disillusionment and moral decline. Finally, the study calls for a return to the core message of the gospel, advocating for a balanced approach that prioritizes spiritual growth, character development, and social justice. This analysis aims to contribute to ongoing discussions about the role of theology in shaping ethical practices within the Nigerian church.
